class information

Dream up a design and bring it to life with this independent study membership. This class is for students who have a very specific project in mind, and want to further their education by learning the techniques to execute their vision execute their vision under the guidance of our instructors.

Challenge yourself by choosing a project with new concepts and joinery or use your time to master the skills you learned previously. Our instructors will carefully lead you through the design process, make sure the design is viable and good, then facilitate you seeing your project to completion.

From there, you’ll head to the lumber yard. As a lumber yard pro you can go on your own, or feel free to tag along on one of our Bohnhoff Lumber Yard field trips every other month.

This is an open-ended class so feel free to work at your own pace while completing your project, and know our instructors will be right there with you while you do it.

Notes from the Shop

Because there are only so many teachers in a class, we restrict students’ first projects to something “simple.” This is an independent study class which means you’ll have a much more rewarding time the more you’re able to work on your own. You’ll spend most of your class waiting for a teacher to help you.

With that in mind, think of a project that utilizes the skills you already have, but that also incorporates one or two skills you’d like to learn. A good rule of thumb for your first project is something small with no drawers, doors, or angles.

Cancellation & Rescheduling

This is a subscription-based class. When you sign up, you’re committing to attending on the same night of the week for the duration of your subscription. By signing up for Independent Study Class, you are committing to a monthly subscription and are responsible for maintaining, changing, or canceling your own subscription using the member portal, and that your credit card on file will be auto-billed monthly for your full membership price.

You also understand there are no makeup sessions for missed classes. If a class is canceled by LA Woodshop due to holiday or other shop reasons, we will push your renewal date back by a week.

Every class at LA Woodshop is overseen by our highly skilled instructors who have years of experience as professional furniture makers. You’re in good hands — and those hands just so happen to be masters in the woodshop.
